Discomfort

“It’s worth figuring out where our discomfort with a new idea is coming from.”

-Seth Godin

This quote has become a part of my ongoing thinking process. It’s also become very evident when I see this in the world.

As soon as someone perceives something as discomforting, which is usually an obscure idea or something heretical to their current knowledge base, their impulsive response is to resist.

Carl Sagan advocates that we need resistance, or skepticism, to continuously evolve our understanding of the world. But, this same skepticism needs to be informed not reactionary.

Next time an opposing thought or emotional response arrives into your consciousness from the abyss of the subconscious, it’s worth being skeptical about its deep underlying origins.
